DESCRIPTION: An impressive larvae that gets its name due to the slender trunk-like snout that is formed by the head and thorax. The body is anything from light brown to dark brown (rarely green) with a cream to buff marbling and darker legs. Two-eyes spots are found towards the front of the body which, when enlarged are used to frighten predators. When threatenened not only does the front of the abdomen appear swollen but the caterpillar thrashes about in a somewhat menacing style. FOODPLANT: Willowherbs, Bedstraws and occassionally garden Fuschias. SEASON: Frequently found in Britain. |
